The Complete Guide
Flat roman shades, hobbled roman shades, blackout roman blinds, linen fabric, cordless operation — everything you need to choose the right custom roman shade for every room. By ECO Glass Windows And Doors, official Maxxmar authorized dealer.
What Are Roman Shades?
Roman shades are a fabric window covering that raises into neat horizontal folds and lowers flat across the window. Where a roller shade rolls up around a tube and a cellular blind stacks its pleated cells, a roman shade gathers its fabric into a series of soft horizontal layers — creating a window treatment with a distinctly tailored, architectural look when raised and a clean fabric face when fully lowered.
The roman blind is one of the oldest window covering formats — and its longevity comes from how well it bridges the functional and the decorative. A roman shade can be purely practical: a tightly woven room darkening fabric in a flat roman construction, mounted outside the frame to cover a bedroom window completely. It can also be a design statement: a textured linen fabric in a hobbled roman construction, falling in soft cascading folds over a living room window.
Maxxmar roman shades are 100% made in Canada, available in two construction styles and a broad fabric range, and backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. ECO Glass Windows And Doors supplies and installs the full collection across the Greater Toronto Area — custom measured, ordered, and installed as a complete service.
Flat Roman Shade — Smooth Face
Hobbled Roman Shade — Cascading Folds
Two roman shade constructions — flat for contemporary interiors, hobbled for traditional spaces.
Flat Roman Shades vs. Hobbled Roman Shades
Maxxmar roman shades are available in two construction styles. The style you choose changes the visual character of the shade completely — not just when raised, but at every position and especially when fully lowered. This is the most important decision to make before choosing a fabric.
Flat Roman Shade
When lowered, a flat roman shade presents a single uninterrupted plane of fabric across the window. There are no visible horizontal folds or seams — just a clean, smooth face from top to bottom. When raised, the fabric stacks into neat folds behind the headrail. The overall effect is architectural and precise.
Flat roman shades suit contemporary, minimalist, and modern interiors where clean lines and understated form are the priority. They work equally well with solid fabrics and patterns because there’s no fold structure competing with the print. If the room has a restrained, considered aesthetic, flat roman shades reinforce it.
Hobbled Roman Shade
A hobbled roman shade — sometimes called a waterfall or looped roman shade — maintains a series of cascading horizontal folds across the full fabric face at all times, even when fully lowered. The folds are stitched into the fabric construction and never flatten out, regardless of the shade’s position. The visual effect is luxurious, soft, and dimensional.
Hobbled roman shades suit traditional, transitional, and layered interiors where texture and softness are central to the room’s character. They complement upholstered furniture, patterned rugs, and layered window treatments because the fold structure adds depth rather than simplicity. The right fabric choice — a linen weave, a textured solid, a subtle pattern — transforms a hobbled roman shade into a focal point.
Flat Roman — Raised Position
Hobbled Roman — Raised Position
Both styles raised — flat stacks cleanly behind the headrail; hobbled maintains its fold structure.
Blackout Roman Shades & Room Darkening Fabric Blinds
Roman shades are available in a full range of opacity levels — from sheer and light filtering fabrics that diffuse daylight while keeping the room bright, to room darkening and blackout constructions that significantly reduce or eliminate light transmission. For bedroom blinds and blackout applications, the fabric choice is only part of the equation.
A roman shade — unlike a roller shade — has a fold structure when raised that creates small gaps at the top of the window. For genuine blackout performance, an outside mount installation that covers the full window frame and extends beyond it on all sides is more effective than an inside mount, which leaves the frame perimeter exposed regardless of how opaque the fabric is.
Light Filtering
Diffuses natural light while maintaining daytime privacy. The room stays bright and warm. Suited to living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens where soft natural light is the goal.
Semi-Opaque
Reduces light transmission more significantly than light filtering while still allowing ambient light into the room. A balanced choice for home offices, dens, and rooms where moderate privacy matters.
Room Darkening
Significantly reduces light through the fabric. Combined with an outside mount and proper side coverage, room darkening roman shades deliver near-blackout performance for bedrooms and nurseries.
Blackout Fabric
Opaque fabric that blocks all light transmission through the material itself. For complete blackout, pair with an outside mount that overlaps the frame, eliminating side and bottom gaps.
For bedroom blinds where blackout performance matters, specify an outside mount roman shade with a fabric width that extends at least 2″ beyond the window frame on each side and 3–4″ above the top of the frame. This overlap eliminates the light gap at the perimeter. A blackout fabric inside a standard inside mount will always allow light in around the edges — the mount matters as much as the fabric.
Roman Shade Fabric: Linen, Textured & Custom Options
The fabric is where a roman shade becomes personal. A flat roman shade in a blackout fabric is a functional bedroom covering. The same flat construction in a soft linen-look weave becomes a living room statement. The construction style and the fabric work together — choosing both at the same time produces a result that neither achieves alone.
Maxxmar roman shade fabrics are 100% Polyester — selected for dimensional stability, accurate colour retention, and consistent fold behaviour across the full width of the shade. The collection spans light filtering constructions including linen-look and textured weaves, semi-opaque midweight fabrics, and solid room darkening options. All fabrics are available in both flat and hobbled construction styles.
Linen Roman Shades
Linen-look fabrics in the Maxxmar collection replicate the texture and warm tone of natural linen in a stable polyester construction that doesn’t shrink, fade, or distort with humidity changes the way natural fibre does. The best choice for rooms where a natural, organic aesthetic is the design direction.
Textured Fabric Roman Shades
Textured weaves add visual depth without pattern — the surface catches light differently across the width, creating a subtle dimensionality that works particularly well in hobbled construction where the folds amplify the texture effect.
Solid & Room Darkening
Tightly woven solid fabrics prioritize opacity over surface interest. Available in a range of neutral and dark colourways for bedroom and media room applications where performance takes precedence over decorative character.
Custom Roman Shades
Every Maxxmar roman shade is custom-made to your exact window dimensions. There are no standard sizes — each shade is cut, sewn, and finished to the width and drop you specify. ECO Glass measures every window in person before placing any order.
Dye lots vary within commercial tolerances. For multi-window installations in the same room, order all roman shades at the same time to ensure colour consistency across panels. Roman shade fabric may show minor wrinkling or relaxation on initial deployment — this is normal and resolves as the fabric settles into its operating environment.
Cordless Roman Shades
Cordless roman shades operate without a visible hanging cord or chain. Raising and lowering the shade is done by gently lifting or pressing on the bottom rail — an internal locking mechanism holds the fabric at the selected position without any cord to manage. The result is a cleaner visual profile on the window and a safer operating environment in homes with young children and pets.
Hanging cords on window coverings are a documented child safety hazard. Cordless operation eliminates that risk entirely. Maxxmar cordless roman shades are available in both flat and hobbled construction styles across the full fabric range, and the cordless mechanism does not affect how the shade looks, how it operates, or how the fabric folds.
Cordless roman shades meet current North American child and pet safety standards for window coverings. If you are specifying roman shades for any room accessed by children under 10 — bedrooms, nurseries, playrooms, family rooms — cordless operation is the recommended choice regardless of mounting height.
Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount Roman Shades
The mounting decision affects how the shade looks in the window, how much light it blocks, and how effectively it covers the window opening. Both inside and outside mounting are available for Maxxmar roman shades — the right choice depends on the window’s reveal depth, the room’s design intent, and the required level of light control.
Inside Mount
The shade is installed inside the window recess, sitting flush within the frame. Inside mounting showcases the window’s architectural detail — the moulding, the reveals, the trim — and creates a clean, built-in appearance. Requires a minimum reveal depth to accommodate the headrail and hardware. Light will enter around the perimeter of the shade where it meets the frame.
Outside Mount
The shade is installed on the wall above and outside the window frame. Outside mounting can make a window appear larger, is useful when the reveal is too shallow for inside mounting, and provides significantly better light blockage by covering the full frame and extending beyond it. The recommended choice for blackout bedroom applications and windows with limited depth.
Roman Shades for Every Room
Roman Shades for Kitchens
Roman shades for kitchen windows work best when the right fabric is specified. The kitchen environment is demanding — humidity from cooking, grease from the stove, and the need for easy cleaning all matter. A flat roman shade in a smooth, tightly woven fabric is the most practical choice: the smooth face wipes clean, there are no texture traps to collect grease, and the clean profile keeps the kitchen looking organized. Avoid hobbled construction above cooking surfaces — the fold structure is difficult to clean thoroughly.
For kitchen windows above the sink, a light filtering fabric that diffuses daylight while maintaining a soft glow is the preferred specification. Kitchen roman blinds in neutral linen-look fabrics complement most kitchen palettes without competing with cabinetry or countertop materials.
Roman Shades for Bedrooms
Bedroom blinds need to do one thing well above all others: control light. A blackout roman blind in an outside mount configuration — fabric extending beyond the frame on all sides — provides near-complete darkness when fully lowered. Cordless operation is the right choice for any bedroom, particularly where children are present. The hobbled construction in a room-darkening fabric adds softness to a space that benefits from a less utilitarian feel than a standard roller shade provides.
Roman Shades for Sliding Glass Doors
Roman shades for sliding glass doors are specified as outside mount pull-down shades above the door opening. This works well for patio doors that are used less frequently — the shade can be fully raised when the door is in regular use and lowered for privacy in evenings or when the space is not in use. For doors accessed multiple times daily, a panel track or vertical covering that travels horizontally is usually a more practical specification. ECO Glass can advise on the right product for your specific patio door configuration.
Care & Maintenance for Roman Blinds
Roman shade fabric — whether flat or hobbled, light filtering or room darkening — is a fabric window covering that requires gentle maintenance. The fold structure in hobbled roman shades in particular means that fabric is in continuous contact with itself along the fold lines; any cleaning method that is too aggressive risks distorting the fold geometry.
For routine dust removal, use the upholstery brush attachment on a vacuum at low suction, working along the length of the shade from top to bottom. For spot cleaning, blot the affected area with a soft white cloth dampened with water and a small amount of mild detergent. Do not rub — rubbing can distort the weave and spread the stain. Allow to air dry completely before operating the shade.
Do not machine wash, steam clean, or submerge roman shade fabric. Do not use chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners. For heavily soiled shades, a professional fabric cleaning service is the appropriate solution. Operating a wet or damp roman shade will distort the fold structure and may damage the internal lift mechanism.
