Window Coverings Guide
Maxxmar Sunset Shades:
The Complete Guide
Sheer horizontal blinds with rotating fabric vanes — continuous light control, preserved views, and a profile that changes a room. By ECO Glass Windows And Doors, official Maxxmar authorized dealer serving the GTA.
What Are Maxxmar Sunset Shades?
Maxxmar Sunset Shades are a sheer horizontal blind — a window covering category built around horizontal fabric vanes suspended between two layers of sheer fabric. When you look at a Sunset Shade from inside the room, you see a refined series of soft horizontal bands running across the window. When you adjust the vane angle, those bands rotate to redirect light, control privacy, and change the character of the room.
It’s a product that operates on a different principle than a standard roller shade or a cellular blind. Where a roller shade goes up or down, a Sunset Shade stays in place and changes its angle. The result is a window covering that can go from fully transparent — vanes open, sheer layers forward, the window almost disappears — to a softly luminous filtered state — vanes angled, light diffused and redirected — to a substantially private position with the vanes rotated closed and the layered sheers stacked solid.
Maxxmar’s Sunset Shade is 100% made in Canada, backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty, and available in four cassette profiles plus a specialty shape system. ECO Glass Windows And Doors supplies and installs the complete collection across the Greater Toronto Area.

How Sunset Shades Control Light
The Sunset Shade’s light control mechanism is borrowed from the Venetian blind but executed in soft fabric instead of rigid aluminum or wood. The horizontal vanes — wide, soft fabric bands — are threaded through two sheer fabric layers. When you operate the shade’s tilt control, the vanes rotate around their horizontal axis.
In the open position, the vanes face forward parallel to the glass. The sheer layers on either side of the vanes are essentially transparent at this angle, and you look straight through the window with a clear view of the outside. Light enters freely and the room feels open and connected to the outdoors.
As you rotate the vanes downward, they begin to intercept incoming light and redirect it. The sheer fabric diffuses what gets through, removing the hard shadows and glare you’d get from open windows or unfiltered blinds. The room fills with a soft, ambient quality of light — warm rather than harsh — while the angled vanes begin to obscure the direct view from outside.
In the fully closed position, the vanes are face-down, and the two sheer layers stack over them. The window is substantially covered. Privacy is high. Some diffuse light still comes through — Sunset Shades are not a blackout product — but the room is calm, softened, and screened from direct visibility from the street.
Open
Vanes horizontal — maximum light and view. Room is bright and connected to the outside.
Filtered
Vanes angled — light diffused, glare reduced. Soft ambient quality with partial privacy.
Closed
Vanes face-down — maximum privacy, soft diffuse light still present through sheer layers.
Vanes Open — Full Light
Vanes Angled — Filtered
Vanes Closed — PrivacyThree light positions — the vane angle changes everything.
Maxxmar Sunset Shades are available with a cordless lift and tilt option. No hanging loops, no accessible cords anywhere on the shade. Cordless operation means the vane tilt and shade raise/lower are both managed with gentle hand pressure on the bottom rail, fully compliant with current North American child safety standards.
Sunset Shades vs. Other Window Coverings
Sunset Shades occupy a specific niche in the window covering spectrum — one defined by a combination of view preservation, light quality, and visual refinement that other products approach differently. Understanding where they sit relative to other options makes it easier to specify the right product for each room.
| Product | Light Control | View Preservation | Blackout Capable | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunset Shade | Vane rotation — directional, continuous | Excellent when open | No | Living rooms, dining rooms, feature windows |
| Dual Shade (Zebra) | Stripe shift — open/closed transition | Good when open | No | Flexible living spaces, home offices |
| Roller Shade (Solar) | Fixed openness factor — no adjustment | Good — depends on openness % | No | Glare control, view-priority windows |
| Roller Shade (Blackout) | On/off — up or down only | None when lowered | Yes, with frame system | Bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms |
| Cellular Shade | On/off — or TDBU for partial coverage | None when lowered | With Miracle Fit channels | Insulation-priority applications |
Choose Sunset Shades When
The window is a visual feature of the room — large, prominent, south- or west-facing — and you want a covering that elevates the space while managing light quality and direction. Living rooms, formal dining rooms, primary bedrooms with a view.
Choose Something Else When
The primary goal is blackout performance, maximum insulation, or simple cost-effective coverage of a utility window. Sunset Shades are a premium product for spaces where the window treatment is part of the room’s design, not just a functional cover.
Sunset Shade Cassette Styles
Maxxmar Sunset Shades are available in four cassette profiles. The cassette is the housing at the top of the window that conceals the roller mechanism when the shade is fully raised. Like all Maxxmar products, the cassette changes the visual character of the installation — not the performance of the fabric.
Compact CassetteCompact
Slim extruded aluminum headrail. Minimal wall projection — the right choice for windows with limited mounting depth, inside-mount applications, or spaces where an unobtrusive profile is preferred.
Grande S CassetteGrande S
Small square cassette. A modern architectural profile that reads as an intentional design element — suits contemporary interiors and ceiling-mount installations where a clean geometric line is the goal.
Opera M CassetteOpera M
Round medium cassette. A softer, more traditional profile that transitions well into spaces where curved forms are already present — arched doorways, barrel ceilings, rounded furniture profiles.
Square CassetteSquare
Contemporary square-profile cassette with sharp, precise corners. A strong architectural statement — particularly effective on large windows and open-plan living spaces where scale rewards a bolder profile.

Sunset Shades for Specialty Window Shapes
Maxxmar Sunset Shades extend beyond the standard rectangle. The Specialty Shape system allows the sheer horizontal blind construction to be custom-fit to angled, arched, trapezoidal, and other non-rectangular window openings. The shade is precisely cut and framed to the opening dimensions, maintaining correct vane tension across the full width regardless of geometry.
For homes with architectural statement windows — a dramatic arched window in a stairwell, a trapezoidal clerestory above a kitchen, a wide angled transom over patio doors — the Specialty Shape Sunset Shade delivers the same refined light quality in a configuration most window coverings simply cannot accommodate.

Specialty shape shades are custom-made to exact dimensions — there are no returns or exchanges once production begins. ECO Glass Windows And Doors measures every specialty window in person before placing any order. This is not a DIY measurement situation: a difference of even a few millimetres in a non-rectangular opening changes the cut, the frame, and the fit.
Motorized Sunset Shades
Maxxmar Sunset Shades can be motorized with the MaxxMotor system, available in plug-in transformer or rechargeable battery configurations. The motor fits inside the roller housing and is completely concealed once the shade is installed. Remote controls are available in 1-channel, 5-channel, 15-channel, and 45-channel versions in white or black — one remote for every shade in a single room or every shade in the entire home.
For Sunset Shades, motorization handles both raise/lower and vane tilt. That means the shade’s full range of light control — from open view to filtered ambient to privacy position — is available from a remote, a phone, or a voice command without touching the shade at all. For large windows or ceiling-mounted installations where manual reach is awkward, motorization changes from a luxury to a practical necessity.
Motorized — Plug-In Motor
Motorized — Smart HomeOne MaxxLink WiFi hub at $677 retail connects every motorized Maxxmar shade in the home to a single app and to your smart home ecosystem. Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit (Matter), Control4, Savant, Crestron, IFTTT, and Elan. Set scenes that simultaneously adjust Sunset Shades, roller shades, and cellular shades across every room from a single tap.
MaxxMotor Transformer
Plug-in, 12V low voltage. Best for new builds and renovations where an outlet or hardwire connection is available near the window. Consistent power with no recharging schedule.
MaxxMotor Battery Pack
Rechargeable via USB-C, no wiring needed. Ideal for retrofits, rental properties, or any window where running a power line isn’t practical.
Care & Maintenance for Sunset Shades
Sunset Shades use a delicate sheer fabric construction — the two outer layers are lightweight open-weave material that requires gentle handling. Unlike a roller shade or a cellular blind, the fabric cannot be wiped down with any force because the sheer layers are fragile relative to a tightly woven or coated fabric.
For routine dust removal, use a feather duster or the upholstery brush attachment on a vacuum at its lowest suction setting. Move along the length of each vane — don’t press into the fabric. For spot cleaning, apply a small amount of mild detergent diluted in water to a soft white cloth and blot — don’t rub — the affected area. Allow to air dry completely before operating the shade.
Do not machine wash, steam clean, or submerge any part of a Sunset Shade. Do not use chemical cleaners or solvents. If the fabric has been significantly soiled, contact ECO Glass Windows And Doors — in some cases a professional fabric cleaning service is the appropriate solution rather than attempting to clean in place.
Dye lots vary within commercial tolerances. For multi-window installations, order all shades at the same time to ensure colour consistency across the room. Minor fabric relaxation on initial deployment is normal and resolves over the first few days of use as the fabric acclimatizes to the room’s humidity and temperature.
Maxxmar Sunset Shades — Supplied & Installed by Experts
A Sunset Shade that’s not level looks wrong the moment you look at it — the vanes tilt visibly rather than hanging true. One that’s even slightly too wide binds against the frame and the vanes can’t rotate freely. One with the wrong cassette profile sticks out at the wrong angle and never sits flush against the wall or ceiling. These aren’t product defects. They’re what happens when a premium product gets measured and installed without the right expertise.
ECO Glass Windows And Doors measures every window in person, selects the right cassette and configuration for the application, orders directly from Maxxmar as an authorized dealer, and installs with the precision the product requires. We’ve done this across hundreds of windows in the GTA — from straightforward rectangular living room windows to architectural specialty shapes in custom homes. Every installation is backed by Maxxmar’s Lifetime Limited Warranty on Sunset Shades.
