What Are California Shutters?

In practical terms, it means you can tilt your louvers in whichever direction suits the room’s light angle without sacrificing privacy.

Hidden Gear System (Somerset)

Somerset’s defining feature. Instead of a tilt-bar running vertically down the panel face, an internal gear mechanism inside the frame stile allows the louvers to tilt. The result is a shutter panel with no visible operating hardware — just the louvers and the frame. Preferred in contemporary kitchens, great rooms, and anywhere the tilt-bar would interrupt the visual simplicity of the installation.

Classic Tilt-Bar vs. Hidden Rear-Mini Tilt

All tilt-bar models — Talento, Summerview, Cashmere, Tilia — offer a choice between the standard front tilt-bar and the hidden Rear-Mini tilt system. The Rear-Mini moves the tilt-bar to the rear hinge side of the panel where it is not visible from the front. Note: rear-hinge tilt requires an additional 1 inch of clearance on the hinge side.

California shutters for sliding patio doors require a track-based configuration — the shutter panels cannot swing open on hinges across a door opening that needs to remain accessible. Maxxmar offers two track system options for patio door applications.

French Doors

Maxxmar California shutters on French doors are configured with a Squareness/French Door Frame — a universal frame type available in inside mount, outside mount, and French door frame mounting options. A ½” adapter enables mounting around existing French door moulding. The Summerview line also offers specific French door pricing in its program, and a French Door Handle Cut-out for shutters with frames is available at a surcharge when a lever handle needs clearance.

Bay Windows

California shutters for bay windows are one of the most striking applications in the collection. Each angled bay section receives its own shutter panel, fitted in a perimeter frame that follows the angle of the bay. The panels open independently on hinges to allow airflow and window access. A 25% surcharge applies to bay or bow window (perimeter framed) and angle/corner applications. Divider rails and T-Posts are included in pricing.

Specialty Shapes

Both the vinyl and wood shutter lines support specialty shape applications — arched tops, octagons, half-rounds, and other non-rectangular window openings.
